India Post tracking: check a delivery and follow up on a complaint
A tracking search tells you about a postal item; a complaint starts a separate enquiry. Keep those two records together when a delivery needs attention. This guide covers postal-item tracking and delivery enquiries, rather than savings accounts or insurance.
Your quick checklist

1. Identify the number before searching
Ask the sender for the postal booking receipt or the article number recorded for your item. If you have several purchases in progress, label each postal reference with the corresponding order. A seller’s order number is not automatically the number used by the postal carrier.
The India Post homepage offers separate Consignment ID, Money Order and Complaint ID options under Track and Trace Services. For a postal article, choose the consignment option and enter the reference requested on the screen. The page also distinguishes article and reference-number choices; match the selected option to the number you actually have.
2. Preserve what the result actually says
Copy the latest status wording, event date and any location shown, together with the date and time of your check. If you share the result with the sender, include those details so you are discussing the same update. Avoid turning an intermediate status into a promised delivery date.
If there is no result, recheck the selected search type and the number against the booking record. If the page reports a CAPTCHA or loading error, that is not a delivery result. Return to the official site and try again, or ask the sender or post office to help identify the correct reference. Do not assume that an unsuccessful search proves the article is lost.
3. Open a delivery enquiry when tracking does not answer the question
India Post links its customer complaint portal from both the homepage and its complaint-registration guidelines. Use that official route for an online enquiry and follow the current form instructions.
Prepare a compact account: the article number, booking date and office if known, the last tracking update, and the question you need answered. For example: “The result shows [status] dated [date], but the recipient reports [what happened]. Please check [specific issue].” This is a suggested outline, not a statement of mandatory form fields. Keep receipts and relevant screenshots available for any supporting-information request.
4. Keep a complaint record, not just another tracking screenshot
After submitting, retain any acknowledgement and complaint reference. The guidelines link online complaint lodging and status updates; the homepage also offers a Complaint ID search. Use the reference requested by the selected screen, and keep the original article number separately.
For an in-person complaint, the official guidelines direct customers to the post office where the transaction took place and say to obtain an acknowledgement. They also describe approaching the next higher departmental authority if the matter remains unsettled. Read the current instructions and contact list before choosing a follow-up destination.
5. Make the next conversation specific
A useful follow-up begins with the existing complaint reference, the date it was registered and what remains unresolved. Add any new tracking event or response from the recipient. If the enquiry is marked closed, explain why the answer does not address the issue rather than replacing the record with an unrelated description.
India Post publishes its helpline on the official homepage. Check that page for the current number and operating information if you need help choosing a route. Keep full addresses, receipts and reference numbers within the official enquiry or a private exchange with the sender.

Frequently asked
- Is checking tracking the same as registering a complaint?
- No. Keep the article’s tracking record and any complaint acknowledgement as separate records. A tracking search alone does not show that you filed an enquiry.
- Can this guide tell me when the item will arrive?
- No. Use the current official result and ask India Post about an unresolved delivery question. This guide does not provide a delivery estimate or determine refund eligibility.
