India passport application: use Passport Seva to apply, check an appointment and track status
An online application, an appointment and a status check are different steps in the Passport Seva process. Keep the account and application record private, use the Ministry of External Affairs’ official portal, and treat the current portal instructions as the source for documents, fees and availability.

1. Start with the official portal
Use the Passport Seva website operated for the Ministry of External Affairs. Its home page lists Fresh / Reissue Ordinary Passport, Tatkaal Passport and other services, and warns that fraudulent websites and mobile apps may collect applicant data or charge for application assistance.
Choose the service that matches your situation before entering details. A fresh or reissue ordinary passport, a Tatkaal application and a police-clearance request can have different instructions. This guide does not decide eligibility, document sufficiency or the fee for an individual application.
2. Register, complete the form and use the current document guidance
Passport Seva’s Fresh / Reissue Ordinary Passport process directs a new applicant to register, confirm the registered email address, log in and complete the appropriate form. Keep the login ID, password, application number and any confirmation private; do not give them to an unverified intermediary.
The same official process page links the current document lists, fee calculator and annexures. Read the list for the exact service and circumstances before an appointment. Do not rely on a generic online checklist, an old screenshot or a document list for a different applicant category.
3. Treat appointment availability as a live result
Use Passport Seva’s appointment-availability page to select the Passport Office and Passport Seva Kendra requested by the page. Availability can change as appointments are cancelled or rescheduled, so an earlier result is not a promise that a slot remains open.
The official application process says the appointment confirmation screen shows the appointment details and that an SMS is sent to the registered mobile number. Keep the confirmation available for your visit. It also tells applicants to carry the necessary documents on the appointment date; confirm the current portal list for your application rather than assuming every applicant needs the same papers.
4. Prepare for the visit without making assumptions
Bring the original documents and any copies or supporting material specified in the current Passport Seva guidance for your case. Check the appointment location, time and service type again before travelling. If a detail is unclear, use the official portal or Passport Seva’s published support route instead of submitting sensitive identity documents to an unofficial helper.
Tatkaal has its own eligibility and document guidance. The portal states that applicants should check Tatkaal eligibility and bring the required undertaking and documents where applicable. It does not follow that a Tatkaal route is available or appropriate for every applicant.
5. Track the application with the right reference
After an application has a file number, use Passport Seva’s Track Application Status page. It asks for an application type, file number and date of birth. Enter only your own information on the official screen and avoid sending those details in a public message or screenshot.
Save the status wording and the date you checked it. A status result records the portal’s current display; it is not a guaranteed delivery date or a substitute for a request from the Passport Seva system. For help with a portal issue, Passport Seva publishes its National Call Center on the official site; verify the current contact information there before calling.
