How to check your Indian train journey using official sources
A train journey involves several different checks: whether your reservation is confirmed, how the train is running, where to board and whom to contact if something goes wrong. Keeping these checks separate makes the information easier to use. Start with your ticket, use official enquiry services for the latest available information, and confirm boarding details again at the station.

Check the reservation attached to your PNR
Keep your PNR, train number, boarding station and journey date together. Open the Indian Railways PNR enquiry and compare the result with your ticket.
Pay attention to both booking status and current status. Booking status records the reservation position when you booked; current status is the position shown when you check. The page also identifies charting status and explains reservation abbreviations.
Indian Railways cautions that current status may change before final charts are prepared. A prediction is also only indicative. If you booked while waitlisted, return to the official enquiry before travel rather than treating an earlier screenshot or predicted confirmation as your final status.
Check movement and disruptions separately
Open the National Train Enquiry System, or NTES. Its menu separates Spot Your Train, Live Station, Train Schedule and Train Exception Info.
Use Spot Your Train to investigate the selected train’s running information. Use Train Exception Info to check disruptions, including cancellations, diversions and rescheduling. Match the train number and the date requested by the enquiry carefully, particularly for overnight journeys.
A schedule describes the planned journey. Expected arrival or departure information describes an estimate for the running service. CRIS, which develops NTES, explains these distinctions in its NTES service overview.
NTES also warns that information marked with an asterisk is dynamic. Recheck when making a travel decision; a saved result records an earlier check.
Confirm the platform at the station
Treat a platform number as something to verify again when you arrive. Check that the station display refers to your train number and direction, listen for announcements, and ask the enquiry counter or railway staff if information conflicts.
Indian Railways’ passenger information systems support both platform information and announcements of platform changes. The practical implication is that an earlier platform indication should not be treated as permanent. The railway’s passenger amenities handbook describes these functions.
Leave yourself time to check the train and coach information before boarding. If two sources disagree, seek clarification at the station before moving with the crowd.
Handle booking and refund questions through IRCTC
For an IRCTC e-ticket, begin with the booking record in your IRCTC account. The official e-ticket FAQ directs users to their booked-ticket history for cancellation.
Before taking action, read the instructions that apply to that ticket and situation. A voluntarily cancelled booking, an unsuccessful payment and a disrupted journey can require different handling. This guide does not calculate a refund or determine eligibility.
For help, use IRCTC eQuery, which provides query submission and status checking. Prepare a short account of what happened, the transaction reference and any relevant booking details. Keep the acknowledgement so you can follow up on the same issue.
Use RailMadad for a train or station concern
For problems during the railway journey or at a station, open RailMadad. The portal offers separate train and station complaint routes and a way to track a concern. It also displays the railway helpline 139.
Describe the issue precisely: train number or station, date and time, location, and coach or berth where relevant. Add useful supporting material if the form allows it. Keep the complaint reference and use the tracking option to check progress.
Choose the route that matches the problem: IRCTC support for a booking transaction question; RailMadad for a train or station service concern. A running-status enquiry alone does not register a complaint.

Frequently asked
- Does a confirmed ticket mean the train is running on time?
- No. Reservation confirmation and train movement answer different questions. Check your reservation through the PNR enquiry, then check the service through NTES.
- Can I rely on an old screenshot of the arrival time or platform?
- Use it as a record of an earlier check. NTES identifies dynamic information, and railway station systems can announce platform changes. Refresh the enquiry and confirm the current station information before boarding.
- Where should I start if a booking or refund question remains unresolved?
- Use IRCTC eQuery and retain the query reference. Explain the transaction and the result you are seeing. For a train or station complaint, use RailMadad.
