New York City volunteers planted 20,000 marsh seedlings in 2003; 80% were healthy by 2005
New York City's Big Egg Marsh restoration began with planting 20,000 cordgrass seedlings. Volunteers and scientists worked to re-establish the salt marsh ecosystem. Despite early challenges, vegetation successfully covered over eighty percent of the site. This successful project paved the way for further marsh restoration efforts. Jamaica Bay has since seen over 150 acres of marshland restored.
