Feral sheep introduced to Socorro Island caused severe ecological damage over decades. An eradication program removed 1,762 sheep between 2009 and 2012. Vegetation cover and soil conditions began recovering surprisingly quickly after grazing pressure ceased. This recovery demonstrated the island's remarkable ecological resilience and capacity for self-repair. However, other invasive species like feral cats remain a significant conservation challenge.
