New York pays $28.25 million for land around abandoned nuclear plant, plans public access
New York has purchased nearly 750 acres surrounding the former Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant on Long Island for $28.25 million. The acquisition, the largest in the history of the state's Department of Environmental Conservation on Long Island, will permanently protect coastal forests, wetlands and wildlife habitats. The state also plans to develop public trails, parking facilities and beach access in the coming years.
