A Texas oil geologist first saw McKittrick Canyon in 1921, later bought the land for a private retreat
In 1921, petroleum geologist Wallace Pratt was captivated by the stunning landscape of McKittrick Canyon. He subsequently partnered to acquire land which led to the establishment of family homes. Commencing in 1959, Pratt generously began donating his land for conservation, culminating in the 1972 creation of Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Today, his former residences stand preserved within the park, serving as valuable educational resources.
